About the suburb Ludmilla
Ludmilla is a northern inner suburb of the city of Darwin.
Ludmilla, as a suburb, obtained its name from Ludmilla Creek. The suburb is believed to have been named after Ludmilla Holtze by Gustav Sabine, who was a Government Surveyor, and who carried out a survey of that particular area in 1893. As the name did not appear on any maps prior to this survey it is pretty certain to have been Gustav Sabine (Sabine Road, Millner). Ludmilla Creek in Darwin was named after Ludmilla Holtze. Ludmilla Holtze married Charles William Hughes on the 4th November, 1889, at Palmerston, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. They together had 5 children (2 sons and 3 daughters). Ludmilla was born in 1871 and she died in Adelaide South Australia in 1971. The Headstone on the grave situated at North Road Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia shows that Ludmilla Hughes was the only daughter of Maurice & Evlampia Holtze. She migrated to Australia from Hanover in 1872, together with her father (Maurice), mother (Evlampia) and three brothers (Nicholas, Alexis and Waldemir). Maurice Holtze was a Government Gardener (1878-1891) and was responsible for the development of the cultivation of plants in Palmerston (Darwin). Dr. Maurice Holtze was for many years the Director of the Experimental Gardens, Darwin, and subsequently, he was Director the Botanic Gardens, Adelaide, South Australia.
