About the suburb Belgian Gardens

Belgian Gardens is situated in the northern region of Townsville in Queensland. The suburban town is about 1,113 kilometres away from the capital city of Brisbane. Mount Saint John, Many Peaks Range and Cape Pallarenda are some of the different geographical features that are found in the area of Belgian Gardens. The district of Belgian Gardens has a number of nearby tourist attractions as well. Some of these include Reef HQ Aquarium, which is known to be the largest coral reef aquarium in the world, and the Museum of Tropical Queensland, which exhibits the cultural and natural heritage of tropical Queensland. The transportation services of Belgian Gardens are mainly connected by the Garbutt's Siding train station and also via the Townsville Airport. Town visitors who wish to stay for relaxation may choose from different nearby hotels, such as Castle Lodge Motel, Palm Waters Holiday Villas and Shoredrive Motel, among many others.

Before the advent of World War I, the suburb was named German Gardens after a vineyard owned in 1867 by German settler, Heinrich Fredrich Alfred Robinson. However, during the course of the war due to anti-German sentiment, the suburb was renamed to Belgian Gardens. Townsville North State School was opened on 4 July 1887. On 20 June 1930, the school was renamed Belgian Gardens State School. During the influenza epidemic in 1919, schools were closed and Belgian Gardens school was converted into an isolation hospital with the army erecting tents in the grounds; 195 patients were hospitalised at the school with 6 deaths. In 1954, 246 students were enrolled.
